Explore the Lake Manyara National Park

ABOUT LAKE MANYARA

Lake Manyara National Park is a remarkable destination located in a stunning setting against the steep western wall of the Rift Valley. It is situated along the route from Arusha or Tarangire to Ngorongoro, making it a popular stop for both day visits and longer stays. However, its exceptional qualities make it a must-visit national park regardless of its convenient location. In fact, it was designated as part of a World Biosphere Reserve in 1981, highlighting its ecological importance.

Spanning an area of 325 square kilometers, Lake Manyara National Park encompasses five distinct habitats that coexist side by side. This diversity creates a unique experience during game drives, as you witness a remarkable variation in landscapes throughout your journey. One end of the park features abundant ground water springs that emerge from the base of the Rift Valley wall. These springs give birth to a lush, jungle-like ground-water forest, which stands in stark contrast to the surrounding dry acacia woodlands and the vast shallow alkaline lake that stretches across the valley floor. Additionally, the park boasts a steep escarpment wall adorned with boulders, creating yet another habitat for wildlife to thrive.

MIGRATION OF HUGE HERDS OF MAMMALS

Lake Manyara National Park offers visitors a chance to observe a wide array of wildlife species in their natural environment. The park is home to a rich variety of mammals, including elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and several primate species such as baboons and blue monkeys. Lions are also a highlight of the park, known for their unique tree-climbing behavior—a behavior rarely seen in these big cats elsewhere.

In addition to the impressive animal life, Lake Manyara National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The lake attracts a vast number of bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, and a variety of waterfowl. The park’s diverse habitats provide ample opportunities for bird enthusiasts to spot both resident and migratory species.

Whether you visit Lake Manyara National Park for a day or decide to spend more time exploring its wonders, you will undoubtedly be captivated by its scenic beauty, abundant wildlife, and unique habitats. This exceptional destination showcases the incredible diversity and natural wonders that Tanzania has to offer.

When to go

All year, although the most popular times
are during the two dry seasons June – October and
January and February.

Getting there

Air. There is a small airport on the edge of the Rift Valley above Manyara that has regular scheduled flights all year round.

Road. A good tarmac road runs close by the main gate linking Manyara to Arusha, Tarangire Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, and therefore to other places further afield. The journey from Arusha takes about 2 hours. There is also access from the southern end along a graveled road from Babati.
