Day 9 : Ngorongoro Crater
Crater Day
Today you will set off very early and go on safari in the crater until midday.
The crater is home to a lot of animals, which are not ‘trapped’ there, as is often claimed, but rather wander in and out. It can also happen that you see relatively few animals. There are black rhinos in the crater. However, the chance of seeing them up close is very slim. Most of the time you only get ‘documentary photos’. On this trip you are guaranteed to see the rhinos up close in Mkomazi Park.
At midday you will return to Pakulala Camp and enjoy our lunch there with a view of the crater before continuing on to Tarangire Park. The day’s destination is the Osupuko Lodge at Tarangire Park.
Accommodation: Osupuko Tarangire Lodge
Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 10 : Tarangire National Park
Southern Part of Tarangire
Today our destination is the southern part of Tarangire Park. For large parts of the year this is a swamp area and not accessible by car. We use the dry season to explore this very attractive part of the park. At midday large herds of elephants wander into the swamps to drink and refresh themselves in the water.
Tarangire Park
Wherever you go in Tarangire National Park, you will come across the giant baobab trees and plenty of elephants. These two elements give this park a lot of personality. On top a that large numbers of wildebeest, giraffes, hippos, buffalo, baboons, vervet monkeys and zebras and a rugged landscape of rocky hills and rivers, swamps and savannah plains. Tarangire is also a real lion stronghold – and keep an eye out for leopards and cheetahs too.
Accommodation: Osupuko Tarangire Lodge
Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 11 : Drive back to Arusha
Haradali Home
Drive back to Arusha spend time at Haradali Home
Accommodation: Haradali Home
Day 12 : Arusha
Today is a free day to relax after long and strenuous safari days on bumpy tracks.
Possible options are:
• Visit the market with a guide (necessary)
• Visit the nearby cultural center with an art exhibition. Next to it is a very nice shopping mall with a craft brewery
• Not far from Haradali there is a good place for a massage
• Relax by the pool
• Drink a good coffee in the nearby Arusha Coffee Lodge with a craft center and exhibition.
Accommodation: Haradali Home
Day 13: Mkomazi National Park
We set off early as we have a long drive to Mkomazi NP. On the way we will have a picnic lunch in Moshi, eating the best samosas in Tanzania. The main attraction of the day will be a visit to the rhino enclosure. It is the only opportunity in East Africa to see black rhinos up close. The park is very scenic, but you will find that the animals here are much more shy than in the other parks. This is because Mkomazi has not been a national park for long and the animals here have experienced hunting. The park forms a unit with the Tsavo Parks in Kenya. There are no fences (with the exception of the rhino enclosure).
Meals : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: African View Lodge Mkomazi
Day 14: Time to Say Good-Bye
Depending on the departure times, a final game drive will be undertaken early in the morning. Afterwards, we will head to the airport with a packed lunch.
TIP: On the way in Moshi there is a restaurant with the best samosas for miles around. A welcome addition to the packed lunch.
Departure: the departure should be between 5:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. If that doesn’t work, we will be happy to organize one or more additional nights near the airport.
