Day to day Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Moshi

  • Description:
    Arrive in Moshi town, where you’ll be welcomed by your guide. Attend a briefing about the climb, check your gear, and prepare for the adventure ahead. Spend the evening relaxing and acclimatizing.

  • Overnight Stay: Moshi Hotel.


Day 1: Moshi to Umbwe Gate (1,640m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

  • Hiking Distance: ~11 km (7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Start with a drive to Umbwe Gate for registration, then trek through a dense rainforest with steep and narrow trails. The path is rich with flora and fauna, and you may spot colobus monkeys. Reach Umbwe Cave Camp, nestled among giant trees and moss-covered rocks.

  • Overnight Stay: Umbwe Cave Camp (tents).

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900m)

  • Hiking Distance: ~6 km (4 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
  • Habitat: Heath and moorland

Ascend through increasingly sparse vegetation, with panoramic views of Mount Meru and the plains below. The steep path leads to the spectacular Barranco Camp, situated below the towering Barranco Wall and surrounded by dramatic landscapes.

  • Overnight Stay: Barranco Camp (tents).

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995m)

  • Hiking Distance: ~5 km (3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble offering breathtaking views. Cross valleys and ridges in the alpine desert zone to reach Karanga Camp, where you’ll spend the afternoon acclimatizing and preparing for higher altitudes.

  • Overnight Stay: Karanga Camp (tents).

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

  • Hiking Distance: ~4 km (2.5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

A short but steep trek through barren landscapes leads to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit. Spend the day resting, hydrating, and mentally preparing for the summit attempt. Early dinner and rest are essential, as the ascent begins at midnight.

  • Overnight Stay: Barafu Camp (tents).

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,080m)

  • Hiking Distance: ~17 km (11 miles) round trip
  • Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic and rainforest

Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Hike through steep scree and icy terrain, reaching Stella Point (5,739m) before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After a brief celebration and photos, descend to Barafu Camp for rest before continuing to Mweka Camp for the night.

  • Overnight Stay: Mweka Camp (tents).

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m) to Moshi

  • Hiking Distance: ~10 km (6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a well-earned rest and celebration.

  • Overnight Stay: Moshi Hotel.
