Walking safaris

From a unique vantage point, discover the secrets of the bush.

People were forced to walk from place to place in the days before vehicles carved up the landscape, and in doing so, they formed a powerful connection with their natural environment. While game drives are the quickest way to see wildlife, nothing beats walking through the bush. You’ll not only be able to see elephants, plains game, and giraffes in a new light, but you’ll also notice the little things like insects, small mammals, reptiles, and uniquely adapted flora that are just waiting to be discovered.

Walking safaris are completely safe and only require a moderate level of fitness (except when climbing a mountain or tracking mountain gorillas in the forest). A professional game ranger or field guide will accompany you and explain the sights and sounds that make this activity one of the highlights of an Tanzania safari.

Tanzania divides its wild areas into different categories, each with its own set of rules, resulting in a wide range of walking safari practices and standards. In Tanzania, we have some excellent walking safaris with excellent guides, all of whom were chosen after seeing them in person. Walking safaris on fly-camping trips are some of the real highlights.

Walks in the National Parks must adhere to TANAPA’s (Tanzanian National Park Authorities) strict rules, which are in place to ensure that walking is as safe as possible. At any given time, no more than six guests may go on a walk, and they must be accompanied by at least one TANAPA-certified armed ranger who must adhere to specific walking routes. However, because these regulations are new to Tanzania’s national parks, we would only recommend walking safaris from camps that we know have a track record of providing consistently good walking safaris with well-established guides.

Tanzania’s Game Reserves are overseen by the Game Division, a looser organization with hazy regulations, which has resulted in a disparity in walking safari standards. Walking safaris are highly reliant on the guide’s level of experience and knowledge, and thus can be hit-or-miss. All of our recommended Camps employ their own highly qualified guides who adhere to the camp’s specific rules – these walking safaris are excellent. So, if you’re planning a Tanzania safari, make sure to include some walking, but talk to us first because experiences can vary greatly between camps.
