Day to day Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp

  • Hiking Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 2,250 m / 7,382 ft (Londorossi Gate)
  • Ending Elevation: 2,800 m / 9,186 ft (Big Tree Camp)

Description:
After breakfast, transfer to Londorossi Gate for registration. The drive takes 2–3 hours from Moshi, passing through picturesque farmland and villages. After completing formalities, drive to the Lemosho trailhead, where the trek begins. Hike through dense rainforest with lush vegetation and diverse wildlife, including monkeys and exotic birds. Arrive at Big Tree Camp in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Hiking Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 2,800 m / 9,186 ft
  • Ending Elevation: 3,500 m / 11,485 ft

Description:
Leave the rainforest and ascend into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper, offering the first views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s peaks and the Shira Plateau. Enjoy the unique landscape with giant heathers and other endemic flora. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp by mid-afternoon and take the rest of the day to acclimatize.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

  • Hiking Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 3,500 m / 11,485 ft
  • Ending Elevation: 3,850 m / 12,631 ft

Description:
Trek across the scenic Shira Plateau, one of the most stunning and expansive landscapes on Kilimanjaro. The trail is relatively flat, allowing for easy acclimatization. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day resting.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

  • Hiking Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 3,850 m / 12,631 ft
  • Lava Tower Elevation: 4,630 m / 15,190 ft
  • Ending Elevation: 3,960 m / 13,000 ft

Description:
Today is a key acclimatization day. Ascend steadily to Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation and the highest point of the day. After lunch at Lava Tower, descend into the Barranco Valley, where you’ll be surrounded by giant groundsels and other striking vegetation. The day ends at Barranco Camp, situated below the iconic Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Hiking Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 3,960 m / 13,000 ft
  • Ending Elevation: 4,035 m / 13,235 ft

Description:
Begin the day by climbing the Barranco Wall, a challenging but non-technical ascent that offers incredible views. The trail then descends into the Karanga Valley and climbs to Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for additional acclimatization and recovery.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Hiking Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 4,035 m / 13,235 ft
  • Ending Elevation: 4,673 m / 15,331 ft

Description:
A short but steep trek to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Arrive by early afternoon, allowing time to rest and prepare for the summit climb. After an early dinner, sleep for a few hours before waking around midnight for the final ascent.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Gate

  • Hiking Distance: 19 km (11.8 miles)
    • Barafu to Uhuru: 5 km (3.1 miles)
    • Uhuru to Mweka: 14 km (8.7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
    • Ascent: 6–8 hours
    • Descent: 6–8 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 4,673 m / 15,331 ft
  • Uhuru Peak Elevation: 5,895 m / 19,341 ft
  • Ending Elevation: 1,640 m / 5,380 ft
